What did Walter Cronkite once Call Greater Western New York’s Greatest Gift to the Nation?
During his long tenure as anchor for CBS News, Walter Cronkite earned many accolades, among those being a 1972 poll that showed Americans trusted him more than politicians. (For those interested, he would routinely rank anywhere from #1 to #4 among most trusted newsman, but nobody, especially CBS News, seems to remember those polls.) Regardless of the truth behind his trustworthiness, at the height of the network news era, Cronkite had the most distinctive and recognizable voice. I remember him paying the greatest compliment to Greater Western New York, but I can’t seem to find a definitive source confirming this. Do you remember it? Do you have a source? If so, let me know by leaving a comment. If you don’t remember what he said, you can read about it in “It’s Not What You Say, It’s How You Say It.”
